Public funding for the arts changes faster than most people realize.

A property tax amendment and a night at the theatre may seem like separate worlds. In Sarasota County, they’re closer than you’d think. Spend one hour with us and you’ll understand the connection, in plain language, with real numbers.

Monday, October 5 · Florida Studio Theatre · Doors 5:30 p.m. · Program 6:00–7:00 p.m. · Free and open to the public. Registration required.

Did you know?

In a single legislative session, state arts funding can grow, shrink, or vanish from the budget. County grant programs can rewrite their rules even when the tax behind them stays exactly where it is.

And this November, Florida voters will decide on a constitutional amendment that could reshape how Sarasota County pays for the services residents count on every day.

If you lead an arts organization, serve on a board, give to the arts, or simply care about what makes this Florida’s Cultural Coast, this is the hour to get the full picture.

In one hour, you’ll understand five things better

  • What the proposed property tax amendment would actually change, explained without the legalese.
  • What it could mean for Sarasota County’s budget and the services that depend on it.
  • How public dollars reach arts and culture today, from the state and from the county.
  • How and why that funding has shifted in the last few years.
  • How to explain all of it to a neighbor, a board member, or a skeptic.

Who you’ll hear from

Brian Hersh will moderate the evening.

Holly Bullard with Florida Policy Institute will start us off with a plain-language overview of Amendment 3 and what voters are being asked to consider.

Kevin Cooper, who serves on the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Board, will help bring the conversation local, looking at what reduced property tax revenue could mean for community services and institutions.

Rebecca Hopkins will then look at the changing public-funding landscape for arts and culture at the state and county levels — including why the arts community should be paying attention even when a particular funding source isn’t directly tied to property taxes.

From there, we’ll move into a moderated conversation and audience Q&A.

Pull up a chair if you are…

An arts or cultural leader, or on your way to becoming one. A board member who wants to ask sharper questions. A donor or supporter who wants to know where public dollars fit next to yours. Someone in local government or civic life who wants the arts perspective. Or a resident who would rather understand the ballot before voting on it.

You don’t need a background in policy. You don’t need a background in the arts. You need one hour.

About the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County

As Sarasota County’s dedicated Local Arts Agency, the Arts & Cultural Alliance connects artists, organizations, and the community, and serves as the voice of the arts in public life. The arts generate more than $300 million a year here. We work to keep that going, and to make sure every resident and every student has access to it. Together, we shine brighter through the arts.
