Arts for Military
Randy Cohen of Americans for the Arts creates an annual list of 10 Reasons to Support the Arts. Here at the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, we are fortunate to see all of these reasons at the local level. This summer we are going to showcase a local example to support each of Cohen’s reasons.
Arts for the health and well-being of our military.
The arts heal the mental, physical, and moral injuries of war for military servicemembers and Veterans, who rank the creative arts therapies in the top 4 (out of 40) interventions and treatments. Across the military continuum, the arts promote resilience during pre-deployment, deployment, and the reintegration of military servicemembers, Veterans, their families, and caregivers into communities.
The Sarasota National Cemetery is the only one in the nation that includes an art installation. Thanks to the generous contributions of The Patterson Foundation, Patriot Plaza stands at the center of the National Cemetery. The five pieces of art that adorn this plaza all promote the mission to honor service, inspire patriotism, and embrace freedom.
In addition to providing a place for reflection, all Sarasota County students tour Patriot Plaza as part of their civics curriculum. Most of the tour guides are veterans or had family members who severed in the military. Guiding students through these pieces of art provides a way for the guides to connect their experiences to the middle school students.
Free public tours of Patriot Plaza are provided Tuesdays at 10:00 AM.
