Breaking the Glass Ceiling
February 11 : 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm$5 – $25
The Venice Chorale’s second concert of the 2017-18 season, Breaking the Glass Ceiling, will celebrate the work of women composers and poets for an early start to Women’s History Month. The repertoire extends from the 12th century to the 21st century.
Music composed by women is not often part of the standard repertoire of performers. This is not due to a lack of women composers, but rather a lack of societal awareness and encouragement on their behalf. The Venice Chorale is excited to help break that glass ceiling, performing music of Hildegard of Bingen, Gwyneth Walker, Cecelia McDowell, and others.
The concert will also include the 4-song cycle “Like Dust I Rise” featuring four of Maya Angelou’s poems set to music by Mark Hayes, including her famous “Still I Rise”, a poem about triumph over adversity. The Venice Chorale’s Youth Chorus and their new Youth String Ensemble, which debuted with the chorale in their December concert, will also perform.
Tickets are available on the chorale’s website or by calling 941-484-8491.
