Roads are the substrate upon which journeys are traversed. They trace lines across the landscape that carry us towards our futures, and where roads intersect, we see ourselves reflected in what we find there—the signage, buildings and people, the colors, textures and sounds.

But roads can also divide. Roads can sever neighborhoods, separate a community from nature or, at their most destructive, separate a community from itself. With Crossroads: Deconstructing Boundaries in American Art, Ringling College hopes to examine the ways in which art can be used as a tool to dismantle these divisions.

Along with recurring student, staff and glass exhibitions, this year’s exhibition series features artists from diverse walks of life who have used their art to explore the intersections of their lived experiences. As they reveal the complexities in their identities, they also reach out to the viewer with a friendly outstretched hand, inviting them to revel in the universality of the human experience.

We encourage our community to embrace that outstretched hand and help reconfigure the way we relate to each other. Our 2020/21 season includes 20 exhibitions and related events that afford the visitor direct engagement with the artwork and the unique context related to it, including myriad opportunities to connect in-person and online.
