Do you ever find yourself painting endless details and still end up with a composition that doesn’t work… or the shapes are uninteresting and the values are off… or you just don’t like it? That’s where development paintings come into play. They are small, brief and bold. The key is to work in a series developing ideas without wasting time on details. I work on 5×7 or 6×8 panels or heavy bristol paper. With a timer set for 7 minutes or 10 at the most on each sketch. Anything longer is defeating the purpose. These can be done from photos or direct viewing of the scene. Work in acrylic from B&W photos then invent the color. Which means narrowing the colors down to two or three plus white. Small color sketches build enormous confidence and help eliminate the fear of errors when making a larger painting. This is a fun and effective method to gain important skills in painting. The idea is to be bold and willing to do several of the same general subject varying the composition and colors. You can eliminate the fear of trying new ideas because so little time is invested. I will do a couple of timed demos so you can get a good laugh and then coach you through the process and give valuable tips and feedback.
