Island Gallery and Studios proudly presents our Featured Artist for September, larry paul. His Anna Maria Island (AMI) Sunset Series drawings are expressions of the sun setting over Anna Maria Island. This Retrospective reveals the evolution of the series’ drawings from the very first drawing completed in 2017. Personal, yet open and outwardly expressive, the series presents an abstract expressionistic quality with an overlapping and abutting color technique that contrasts and brings the movements together at the same time. The typical colors are easily inspired by a wild brilliance afforded by the mix of sunsets, storms, essences of sailing, and open, blue water. There is a rather “angry” application method in creating these artworks as noted in some frenzy of the pencil strokes, yet anger and calm can be appreciated together. The art observer is encouraged to identify his/her own horizon point and to self-interpret each composition based on his/her own feelings.
larry paul is an award-winning artist who creates unique works of art using Prismacolor colored pencil, inks, and graphite. His art bears a talent that currently includes multiple series and sub-series of numbered “experiments” embracing impressionistic realism and abstract expressionism drawing styles. From impressionistic old doors and windows, realistic plant drawings, and expressionistic interpretations of sunsets, larry paul‘s art derives from decades of inspiration from walking the beaches of Florida’s west coast searching for shark teeth.
