Arts Advocates presents “Meet the Artist – Dean Mitchell” on December 3, 2019, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Betty J. Johnson North Sarasota Public Library, 2801 Newtown Blvd., Sarasota. The event is free and open to the public; reservations are required and can be made at artsadvocates.org.
Mitchell, who works in watercolors, egg temperas, oils, and pastels, will give a brief presentation followed by a Q&A. The two newest acquisitions to the Arts Advocates’ collection will be unveiled: Mitchell’s “Stranger at the Cabildo” and “Tobacco Barn Shadows at the Ball Farm.”
Mitchell was born in Pittsburg in 1957 and raised by his grandmother in Quincy, Florida. He received a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from Columbus College of Art & Design. During his four-decade-long career, Mitchell has become well known for his figurative works, landscapes, and still lifes. He has won over 600 awards, and his works are featured in galleries and museums across the country. According to The New York Times, “Mr. Mitchell is a virtual modern-day Vermeer of ordinary black people.”
Mitchell’s paintings, along with three others from the Arts Advocates’ collection – by artists Shirley Clement and Eugene White – will remain on display at the Betty J. Johnson library through December 5.
