SCD In-Studio Performance Series Presents: Jennifer Nugent
June 18 : 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
One event on June 19, 2021 at 7:00 pm
Jennifer is originally from Hollywood, Florida, and has been living and working in New York City since 1998. Her practices are profoundly inspired by Daniel Lepkoff, Wendell Beavers, Patty Townsend, Thomas F. DeFrantz, and Paul Matteson. Through performing and teaching she aims to nurture the proposition of physicality as a theoretical and complex language that resides inside a rejuvenating container of possibility. Jennifer continues to augment these practices through sharing and refining ideas in front of others—a transmission of spoken and gestural language.
Since living in NYC Jennifer has performed most notably with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company (NYC 2009-2014), Paul Matteson (NYC 2002-2020), David Dorfman Dance from (NYC 1999-2007), and Martha Clarke (NYC 2007-2008). In 2019 Jennifer received an MFA in Dance from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. She is currently a teaching artist at Gibney Dance (NYC), Sarah Lawrence College, (NY), and the virtual platform freeskewl where she hosts a monthly series called pedagogy/poetic entry.
In my artist practice, I address my body, my mind and my being through questioning. I work to articulate my internal experiences through performance and teaching; augmenting these practices by sharing and refining my ideas in front of others—a transmission of spoken and gestural language. My aim is to nurture the proposition of physicality as a theoretical and complex language that resides inside a rejuvenating container of possibility. Within my work I connect with myself through a process of being both a dancer and a feeling/desiring/alive being that becomes revealed through the practice of performance and the continual attending to presence, I am asking how being moved by information that is not coming from myself alone will direct and guide my art making to take on a life that lead me towards uncharted and indeterminate spaces.
I am in the process of developing a new solo, Up Against. Up against abundance, identity, age, loving, and desire / Using dance (steps, improvisation, shape, and gesture) as a way to articulate my curiosities and allow the vibration and energies that surface within the process of being in the studio to reverberate inside the performance. Impulses that surface within the process of being in the studio seem to disappear or have a sense of completion the moment they are composed and explained through movement. This new solo is about everything. What encapsulates a living spirit. I am trying not to shy away from storytelling. Drawn to better understanding the space between self and witness — movement initiated and movement completed–I realize inside solo states I am not alone and continue to thrive in the vibration of this realization.
