The Historic Harpsichord: Beauty for Ear and Eye
January 12, 2019 : 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm$10
Rich h tone color, exciting sonority, fascinating textures, and rhetorical power make the harpsichord a highly gratifying instrument to play and to hear! The decoration of these noble instruments has also made them things of great, sometimes awe-inspiring, beauty.
This informative talk by Musica Sacra’s own Barry Lockard will explore the history of the harpsichord both as a musical instrument and as a decorative object from its humble beginnings some 700 years ago. The presentation will include:
- A talk illustrated with slides of antique and modern instruments including brief recordings of period specific music for the harpsichord.
- Lockard’s own instrument, which is based tonally on the famous antique Colmar Ruckers, on display.
- A brief recital of solo music and vocal ensemble with harpsichord accompaniment presented by Mr. Lockard, select singers from Musica Sacra, and guest harpsichordist, Julane Rodgers.
- The presentation will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.
