Congratulations Joan and Victoria
The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County partnered with Venice Art Center and Art Center Sarasota to bring two Art Battles to the county this past weekend.
Venice Art Center was packed on Friday, January 24 as the community gathered to watch 12 local artists in the Art Battle live painting competition. Artists were provided with equal materials and 20 minutes to complete a piece that would be voted on by the audience. After three rounds of painting, Joan Schnuerch was crowned the Venice Art Battle Champion.
Joan’s style ranges from the realistic to impressionist, with a flair for strong colors as a dominant theme. Joan is most inspired by nature and all its beauty, noting a strong desire to capture it on canvas in oil, watercolor, and acrylic.
On Saturday, January 25, a new group of 12 artists competed in front of another packed house to be named the champion of the Art Center Sarasota Art Battle. Sarasota’s winner was Victoria Gomez Mayol.
Victoria’s painted collages of naturalist elements and electric colors are about women and their connection with nature. The feminine figures in Victoria’s paintings are embraced and surrounded by elements of nature, such as plants or animals, and intuitive graphics such as dots or lines.
All completed paintings were placed on a silent auction allowing the attendees to take home a piece of art and providing compensation to the artists for their talents.
Joan and Victoria will join our January 2019 Art Battle winner, Judy Robertson, to compete in the Florida State Art Battle, which will also be held here in Sarasota. Art Battle champions from across the state will compete on March 14, 2020 at Selby Library. The state winner will continue on the the national championships in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Arts and Cultural Alliance executive director Jim Shirley states, “It is exciting to know that three outstanding local artist will be competing when we host the State Art Battle at Selby Library on March 14. Our community will not only be able to cheer on their local favorites, but will also view great art being created by artists from around the state.”
