Arts Drive Creative Industries

Randy Cohen of Americans for the Arts creates an annual list of 10 Reasons to Support the Arts. Here at the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, we are fortunate to see all of these reasons at the local level. This summer we are going to showcase a local example to support each of Cohen’s reasons.

Reason #7
Arts drive the creative industries.

The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums, symphonies, and theaters to for-profit film, architecture, and design companies. A 2017 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 673,656 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts—4.01 percent of all businesses and 2.04 percent of all employees.

According to the Americans for the Arts’ 2017 Creative Industries: Business & Employment in the Arts report, Sarasota County, FL is home to 1,715 arts-related businesses that employ 5,089 people.

In Sarasota County, creative industries account for 4.4 percent (national average is 4.01 percent) of the total number of businesses located in the county and 2.2 percent of the people they employ.
