Culture Collective at the Opera

Felding Hall at the Sarasota Opera House was abuzz on Friday evening as the Culture Collective enjoyed their private reception before attending the final performance of Manon Lescaut for the season.

Sam Lowry, Director of Audience Development and Steven Grair, Director of Production, lead the group on a behind-the-scenes tour prior to the performance. We dodged hurried performers, sets, and props on the way to the stage. As we entered through the curtains, Sam welcomed us to Paris and shared information about the Sarasota Opera, Puccini, and opera history

First time opera goers and avid fans all learned something new during this experience. For example, do you know why you are not supposed to whistle at the theater? It is because historically theaters hired sailors to control the sets due to their rope skills. Since sailors communicate by whistling, if you whistle in the theater, you may have a set dropped on your head!

The Culture Collective is comprised of young adults who would like to experience a variety of our local performing arts scene. In addition to the Opera, this Culture Collective season includes performances by the Sarasota Ballet, Asolo Rep, Choral Artists of Sarasota with Sarasota Contemporary Dance, Florida Studio Theatre, The Ringling, Sarasota Orchestra, and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.
