Randy Cohen of Americans for the Arts creates an annual list of 10 Reasons to Support the Arts. Here at the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, we are fortunate to see all of these reasons at the local level. This summer we are going to showcase a local example to support each of Cohen’s reasons.

Reason #9
Arts improve healthcare.

Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients, families, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays, better pain management, and less medication.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital utilizes the healing power of music by providing opportunities for their pediatric patients to create music and by providing live music performances in the hospital for patients and their loved ones.
