Florida’s Classical Music Station

WUSF began in 1963 when a committed group of University of South Florida professors recognized radio’s potential to strengthen community connections. Since then, the station has evolved into West Central Florida’s leading NPR affiliate, delivering acclaimed journalism from NPR and other public radio stations, while producing original local coverage that addresses the unique concerns of Tampa Bay area residents across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota, and Manatee counties. Our commitment to reporting on issues that matter most to our region earned WUSF the National Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in 2025.

Today, WUSF serves a weekly audience of 350,000 through multiple platforms: traditional broadcast radio, a daily public affairs program, a daily podcast featuring local news and events, and digital content including newsletters and a comprehensive website—all designed to meet the evolving needs of this vibrant, growing region.

WUSF also operates Florida’s only classical music station WSMR 89.1FM and Arts Axis Florida, a website featuring arts podcasts for younger audiences, live music performances, and information about the arts across the state.

With studios on USF’s Tampa campus and a news production studio in St. Petersburg, WUSF & Classical WSMR connect West Central Florida communities to both local stories and statewide arts and culture programming.
