Patriot Plaza Guides lead Virtual Tour

An incredible opportunity for connection, learning and sharing was launched last week at the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. The inaugural virtual tour of the outdoor art museum at Patriot Plaza was led by two veterans who volunteer as guides for the art collection at Sarasota National Cemetery. The audience was two seventh grade Civics classes and two eleventh grade U.S. History classes at Pine View School.

This first ever virtual tour was coordinated under the leadership of Ria Cooper, Director of Education at the Alliance  and Linda Gould, Community Connection Consultant for The Patterson Foundation. The guides were located at the Arts and Cultural Alliance, where Communications Director, Samantha Wuerfel, had effectively turned the Alliance conference room into a recording studio, complete with selfie light and a beautiful photo of Patriot Plaza as the guides’ Zoom background.

As Mrs. LaVallee began the sessions with her students at Pineview, the guides logged onto Zoom to watch the Patriot Plaza video tour which was developed by students from the Collaboratory at Ringling College of Art and Design. After the video, the class (including several remote-learning students, Zooming in simultaneously from their homes), then spent the remainder of the period in virtual conversation with the guides talking about their military service experience and answering questions about the Patriot Plaza. The result was an exciting and heartwarming experience for everyone involved.

Prior to Covid-19, all eighth-grade Civics students in Sarasota County participated in field trips to tour Patriot Plaza Sarasota National Cemetery through EdExploreSRQ, a TPF initiative in its tenth successful year. In conjunction with the  video tour, teachers and anyone else who is interested, are now able to request a live Zoom meeting with Patriot Plaza tour guides.

We look forward to hosting many more live Zoom Q&A sessions with Patriot Plaza tour guides, even after in-person tours resume. The new opportunity to connect and share with interested individuals in Sarasota and all over the world is only the beginning.
