Smile – Sarasota Public Art
Smile is a sculpture by Jorge Blanco that stands at the corner of Tamiami Trial and Boulevard of the Arts in front of Hotel Indigo. This is a developer owned piece of public art that was acquired in 2005. Blanco has created over 24 public art sculptures that have been placed all over the world. In an interview with The Observer Media Group, he states, “Art is communication, and with public art, you can communicate to many people for almost forever.”
Jorge Blanco did not begin his career by creating bright geometric pieces, but rather evolved to a point of creating pieces that make people, well, smile. On his website Jorge writes, “I have been a sculptor for 34 years, but only since 1992 I have tried to express the joyful spirit of life through simple geometric lines and bold color.”
You can spot another piece of his work, The Runners, on Tamiami Trail and soon a new Blanco piece will be installed at the center of the new roundabout at the intersection of Orange Ave and Ringling Boulevard. Jorge is also a resident of Sarasota, so you may just spot the artist around town as well!
